Our island neighbor, Washington's Landing has changed immensely over the last 30 years. Formerly known as Herr's Island, the oval piece of land that rests in the middle of the Allegheny River with sweeping downtown views used to be home to pungent factories and mills, and was not exactly the kind of island you'd head to for a night out. These days, all that has changed, and now Washington's Landing - named after the story of George Washington himself crashing on the land for a night after losing his raft during the French and Indian War - is home to its own waterfront restaurant, marina and boathouse, and luxury residential and commercial real estate that you’re definitely going to want to put on your weekend activities list this fall.
The beautiful trip to Washington’s Landing is just a short walk from Lot 24, and during autumn, it’s a beautiful chance to take in the leaves changing with the cityscape as your backdrop. Simply head over the pedestrian bridge, and explore all this little island has to offer.
If you’re looking to get your steps in, check out Three Rivers Heritage Trail, a 24-mile nonlinear trail that leads you through Pittsburgh’s diverse riverfront neighborhoods. Now that the heat of summer is off of us, it’s the perfect time to take advantage of an afternoon adventure like this. If you’re more of a water-lover than a land-dweller, head over to Three Rivers Rowing Association and find out about how you can get involved in their many recreational and competitive rowing leagues and events. After a productive day of walking, biking, or rowing, treat yourself to a meal at Redfin Blues, the island’s very own waterfront restaurant. Take advantage of those last few warm days and have a drink out on the patio, or watch the game inside at the bar. You can check out their hours, menu, and happy hour deals here.
