The Best Pittsburgh Ice Cream Shops to Visit this Summer

Much like summertime, ice cream is one of those easy-to-love, all-American treats that puts you in a good mood whether you’re 3 or 83. Your favorite ice cream cone on a hot afternoon, or a big, tasty sundae after dinner never gets old.

Now that the colder months have come and gone, it’s time to reacquaint ourselves with the simple pleasures of our favorite seasonal dessert. Follow along for some insider recommendations on where to find the tastiest scoops near our Pittsburgh luxury apartments.

Family owned and operated since 1923, Klavon’s is a prime example of the rich cultural roots Pittsburgh thrives on. James and Mary Klavon, the original owners of the shop, passed their business on to their eight grandchildren and one cousin, who restored the shop between 1979 and 1999 when it reopened. Klavon’s is reminiscent of simpler times, with traditional marble countertops, steel fountain equipment, classic stools and wooden phone booths. Their vast menu includes custom sundaes, floats and sodas, and over 15 locally sourced and homemade original flavors. Plus, its right here in the Strip District for convenient access!

Check out their website for more of their story, and hours of operation.

At two different “scoop shop” locations in town, Millie’s serves up delicious and unique flavors derived from small-batch recipes that rotate depending on when you visit. Some of the more creative flavors on the menu include olive oil, Vietnamese coffee, and rhubarb sorbet. The shops also carry dairy-free options for those with dietary restrictions, including delectable banana nut ripple and coffee crunch. You can find Millie’s ice cream at both the Market Square and Shady Side locations, as well as by the pint at various groceries throughout town. Much like Klavon’s, The Milkshake Factory dates all the way back to 1914, when it began as a small shop in Lawrenceville. Four generations later, The Milkshake Factory is owned and operated by siblings Mark, Dana, and Chris Edwards, who source local dairy from Rivendale Farms to help create handspun shakes, sundaes, and chocolate. Their menu includes an impressive array of milkshakes, floats, and sundaes of just about every flavor combination you can imagine. Plan your visit to their downtown location today.
